Curriculum Vitae

Tertiary Education:

  • 1986-1990 – University of the Witwatersrand, Bachelor of Arts: majors in Psychology, International relations, African literature, Modern Greek, Politics
  • 1990-1993 – Johannesburg Art foundation- Fine Art and sculpture.

Book cover commissions:

  • South African institute of International Affairs – Swedish International Development agency (SIDA)- 2009 – commission portrait of USA President Barak Obama. Work created with world postage stamps.
  • South African institute of International Affairs – Swedish International Development agency (SIDA)-2007 – commission portrait drawing of Nobel Laureate Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.
  • South African institute of International Affairs , Royal Danish government-2005 – commission portrait painting of Wangari Muta Mary Jo Maathai Kenyan environmental and political activist.
  • South African Foreign policy publication, Konrad Adenauer Foundation: “Apartheid past – Renaissance future” -2004- commissioned portrait painting of South African president Nelson Mandela.

Book Illustrations & research work:

  • 1993-1994 Yannis worked with renowned Greek author and poet Maro Loizou (1940-2007) on her book series "ε" (“one folk story – one country”). The work was based on Yannis’ research and drawings about southern African fairy tales and traditional South African stories.
    (Maro Loizou helped create an artists’ movement aimed at bringing about social change through cultural activism.)

Memberships:

  • Cultural administrator of the George Bizos SAHETI scholarship and bursary fund.
  • Vice director of International exchange for the Rendezvous art project- for South Africa, France, Greece.

Commercial career:

  • 1993-to present day- founder, CEO and creative director. Salamander Design Concepts
  • Salamander Design concepts, the brainchild of Yannis Generalis, has been involved in commercial eventing design for the past 20 years. The company’s creative scope has also extended to show production, theatre and television set design, as well as restaurant design across South Africa.

Community Art projects:

  • “Music for the children foundation” - 2004 until present day. A project involving all visual and performing arts, with focus on creative workshops with young children from disadvantaged communities, as well as terminally ill children.
  • “Nkosi’s haven” - 2005 until present day - “theatre and arts initiative”. Supporting the home for HIV+ orphans and abandoned young mothers by introducing cultural initiatives and programmes.
